West km® Knowledge Management Solutions from Thomson Elite Now Available in Canada

Key improvements include WestlaweCARSWELL integration and Canada-specific cite recognition

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2006 Thomson Elite has launched two of its leading knowledge management solutions in Canada: West km® for Transactions and West km® for Litigation. Thomson Elite is part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and a worldwide provider of integrated practice and financial management systems for professional services firms.

West km for Transactions helps users find, analyze and reuse precedent documents, clauses and definitions from within their own document collections, allowing transactional attorneys to gain negotiating leverage against opposing counsel. West km for Litigation, which utilizes KeyCite®, West’s powerful citation research service, speeds the research and preparation of documents so that users can be more productive and billable. Together with West km® DealProof, an intelligent document analysis, summarization and proofreading product, Canadian firms can now leverage the entire West km product family.

Both West km for Transactions and West km for Litigation have been tailored to integrate with the WestlaweCARSWELL online service from Carswell. Now when users sign on to the online resource, West km can automatically pull documents from the organization’s document management system and display local content as part of the search results. WestlaweCARSWELL brings together the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, comprehensive case and statute citators, full-text law reports and commentaries into an Internet-based legal research system. Cite recognition indexing has been enhanced to identify all Canadian case law references in users’ firm documents and check whether the references are up-to-date. With the new recognition logic, KeyCite flags are dynamically rendered so users immediately know whether case law in the search results is currently valid.

Canadian legal organizations are already anticipating the benefits expanded product availability will bring to their practices. “For Canadian law librarians that have crossed over into knowledge management, this provides a welcomed solution and brings order to the chaotic world of legal information management,” commented Richard J. Dubé, director, library and information services, Stikeman Elliott LLP.

“Our decision to make these West km products available in Canada continues our investments in a community that’s important to us,” said George May, vice president, West km, Thomson Elite. “We’re committed to developing new products and enhancing existing products to meet Canada’s unique business requirements.”

Thomson Elite has had a strong presence in Canada for several years, and opened a new facility in Calgary in October 2005. The new office serves as headquarters for the Canadian customer support team and a training facility staffed by teams knowledgeable in Canadian regulatory requirements.
